Pseudomonas flourescens CL145A (Zequanox®) for Zebra Mussel Control: A Synopsis of Peer-reviewed References

چکیده
Beginning in the early 1990s, researchers at the New York State Museum began investigating bacteria and their natural metabolic products as selective agents for the biological control of zebra and quagga mussels (Dreissena polymorpha and D. rostriformis bugensis, respectively). This research team discovered that one specific strain (CL145A) of the soil bacterium Pseudomonas flourescens can cause mortality in dreissenid mussels. When ingested via a mussel’s filter feeding, a metabolite associated with the bacterium’s cell wall destroys the mussel’s digestive system and leads to death. Exposure to either live or dead P. flourescens CL145A cells results in mussel mortality. Recently, dead P. flourescens cells have been formulated under the trade name Zequanox®, which has been commercially available since 2012 when the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) approved its use for mussel control in enclosed systems (e.g., infrastructures for energy producers and manufacturing companies). The EPA approved Zequanox for open water use to combat invasive mussels in lakes, rivers, and other waterbodies in 2014. To better understand the possible benefits and effects of this product, this report summarizes the available peer-reviewed, scientific literature on P. flourescens CL145A and its effects on nontarget organisms.

Non-target trials with Pseudomonas fluorescens strain CL145A, a lethal control agent of dreissenid mussels (Bivalvia: Dreissenidae)
In an effort to develop an efficacious and environmentally safe method for managing zebra mussels (Dreissena polymorpha) and quagga mussels (Dreissena rostriformis bugensis), we initiated a research project investigating the potential use of bacteria and their natural metabolic products as biocontrol agents. This project resulted in the discovery of an environmental isolate lethal to dreissenid...

We reviewed the scientific literature addressing physiological constraints of zebra mussel and found seven studies that measured the effects of water calcium concentrations (mg/l, hereafter Ca) on zebra mussel development and growth (Jones and Ricciardi 2005, Allen and Ramcharan 2001, Hincks and Mackie 1997, Mellina and Rasmussen 1994, Ramcharan et al 1992, Strayer 1991, Sprung 1987). Zebra mussel, Dreissena polymorpha, is a biofouling organism that lives generally in freshwater ecosystems. Zebra mussel infestation has occurred at various freshwater structures and systems including raw water intakes, industrial and domestic distribution pipelines, and hydropower facilities at its native regions as well as distant locations. A study was conducted to perform risk assessment an...

A large-scale study of Saginaw Bay was initiated in 1990 and continued through 1993 to examine the effects of the zebra mussel colonization which began in summerlfall 1991. Saginaw Bay responded quickly to the zebra mussel colonization, as fall 1991 values of chlorophyll were similar to 1992 and 1993 values. In inner Saginaw Bay, where most zebra mussels were found, chlorophyll, kPAR, and total...
